What is autism spectrum disorder (ASD)?

Autism is officially known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) because there is a wide range of traits and behaviors associated with it. On one end of the spectrum, there are kids who are nonverbal and cognitively impaired, needing 24/7 support. On the other end are high functioning, intensely verbal autistic kids who need much less support. Parents may first notice signs in toddlers, such as delayed language or repetitive play.
